Il workshop “La Sughereta – The Cork Oak” è l’ultimo intervento del progetto di arte contemporanea Cassata Drone sul territorio siciliano. Il workshop, guidato dall’artista internazionale Andrea Masu – fondatore del progetto Incompiuto Siciliano (Alterazioni Video), è incentrato sul concetto di camouflage. I progetti migliori verranno inseriti all’interno della performance del progetto Cassata Drone al MACRO Asilo di Roma il 20 e 21 ottobre. I coordinatori del workshop sono l’artista di base a Venezia Corinne Mazzoli e l’ideatore del progetto Cassata Drone, g. olmo stuppia che coadiuveranno gli input e la guida di Andrea Masu seguendo passo passo i partecipanti.
Il camouflage, inteso come concetto esteso, dove sviluppare testi, progetti artistici, azioni sul territorio problematico della Sughereta di Niscemi, ove lo spopolamento da un lato e la presenza del temibile “device” MUOS (US Navy) alimenta tensioni e fratture negli strati millenari della cultura isolana.

“La Sughereta” is a workshop open to artists, students, and researchers which offers an immersive experience in the “Riserva Naturale Orientata Sughereta di Niscemi”, a vast protected oak tree forest located in the south of Sicily. In the past, this nature reserve was what characterized the area of Niscemi with the production of cork establishing the local economy for its’ inhabitants. Today is but the remnants of what once was a flourishing forest to now what can barely survive Sicily’s droughts, recurring fires and economical speculation. Meanwhile, Niscemi has become infamous for being one of five ground stations called MUOS (Mobile User Objective System), a US ultra-high frequency (UHF) satellite system built within the natural reserve itself.
The workshop-residency represents an opportunity to discuss and reflect on the Sicilian landscape by entering it in relation to its geopolitical and military culture together with mentor Andrea Masu (Incompiuto Siciliano, Alterazioni Video, the visual artists Corinne Mazzoli and g. olmo stuppia. The main theme of the workshop is the concept of camouflage intended as an aesthetic of contemporaneity. In nature camouflage is related to animal techniques of dissimulation and concealment and for the survival of a species. Lately, these techniques have been studied and adopted in the military field as a model for war. Camouflage is a strategy of survival. It is also the act of misleading information, behaving in deceit in the absence of truth. Discussing techniques of camouflage and concealment becomes the pretext for reflecting on the contemporary era of fakery and invisibility in direct contact with the Sicilian landscape.
